  1. Q

What can I expect during a treatment?

    A

We will discuss your medical history and I will ask a series of questions relating to your lifestyle habits and current symptoms. I will then check your pulses and look at your tongue, which is a diagnostic tool in Chinese medicine. As the acupuncture needles are inserted, you may feel mild tingling, numbness, warmth, or heaviness which is normal. The needles are retained for 30 minutes, during which you can relax and rest.
  2. Q

    Does acupuncture hurt?

    A

Acupuncture needles are very fine, single-use, sterile, stainless steel. Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, but the majority of acupuncture points are nearly painless. I myself grew up with a needle phobia, so I understand patients who are apprehensive for their first treatment. I teach my patients breathing exercises during the session to minimize discomfort and increase relaxation.
  3. Q

How many treatments will I need?

    A

It varies between each patient. Each treatment builds off the previous one, so consistency is key to achieving results. Typically short-term or acute conditions require around 6 treatments, while long-term or chronic conditions may require around 10-12 treatments. An initial consultation will help me evaluate each patient and determine the proper treatment plan.
  4. Q

How can I prepare for a treatment?

    A

I highly recommend the following steps. Eat a snack 1-3 hours before your treatment. Wear or bring a change of loose-fitting clothes so they can easily be moved to insert needles. It is important to lie still and relax while retaining needles, so please finish any necessary calls and texts before starting your treatment.
  5. Q

    Do you accept insurance?

    A

I do not accept insurance at this time. Please check with your insurance about flexible spending, because I do accept FSA/HSA debit cards via MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express.
  6. Q

How will I feel after my treatment?

    A

Most people feel relaxed both during and after the treatment, whereas some feel energized. In terms of improvement of symptoms, some people feel better immediately, some feel better the next day, and some feel better after a few treatments. It is important to adhere to the treatment schedule for the best results.
  7. Q

What are the risks and side effects of treatment?

    A

There are very few side effects. There may be some local mild soreness and bruising from acupuncture that can be relieved with a warm compress. Cupping therapy leaves dark circles on the applied area that fade within a week. There is a very low risk for a collapsed lung in acupuncture and burns/blisters in cupping. Again, this is minimal risk. Acupuncture and it's related modalities are regarded as safe.
  8. Q

Should I follow any guidelines between appointments?

    A

I may suggest altering factors in your life and environment that may be affecting your health. It is important to maintain a healthy diet and stress-reduction techniques to aid the process. This, along with acupuncture, will not only help you heal but will also help prevent further imbalances from arising. I may also refer you to a doctor or other practitioner if necessary.
